Liberty Park pastor emeritus dies at 83
James “Jim” R. Bruton, pastor emeritus of Liberty Park Baptist Church, Vestavia Hills, died Aug. 15. He was 83.
Bruton served as pastor of Liberty Park Baptist, formerly Woodlawn Baptist Church, for 33 years before retiring in 2004. In 1993 he led the congregation through the decision of relocating from the inner-city where it had been for more than 100 years to suburban Liberty Park.
During his ministry he also served as pastor of Bethel Baptist Church, Dothan; Liberty Baptist Church, Pansey; and First Baptist Church, Geneva, in addition to churches in Kentucky and Tennessee. Altogether he served the Lord in ministry for more than 50 years.
Bruton held a bachelor’s degree from Howard College (now Samford University) in Birmingham and a master’s degree and doctorate from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky.
He is survived by his wife, Oleta; one child; and two grandchildren. (TAB)
