Cassell, Misty

Misty Cassell is someone you should know. In addition to being selected homecoming queen at Jacksonville State University last fall, she helps incoming freshmen prepare for college life as a peer counselor.

Q: Why have you been a peer counselor?

A: I just thought it was an opportunity to have influence on other people’s lives. I just wanted a chance to put them at ease, show them the ropes and show them that they have a friend on campus.

Q: What does the role demand?

A: It demands being happy and positive 24 hours a day. You can’t be down and out.

Once you’re chosen as a peer counselor you are those people’s peer counselor for their rest of their time on campus.

You almost feel like their mom. You want to give them the full spectrum of opportunities at Jacksonville State.

Q: How do you see yourself involved in this in the future?

A: You can only do it for two years, but this is something that will always be close to my heart. Once a peer counselor, always a peer counselor. The bond you form with your team is very unique. You form friendships that will last a lifetime.

Q: How has this changed you?

A: I’ve learned that activities don’t have to be church-related to be a ministry.

The things that God puts in your path you have to take advantage of and that’s where He’s able to use you.

Q: How do your family members support you?

A: They put up with me when I’m grumpy and tired. When you are involved in this for that month and one-half, they have to understand that most of your time will be taken up by orientation. My family is very supportive of me and behind me in everything I do.
