Citizens of Cedar Bluff voted Aug. 12 to legalize alcohol sales, even though they reside in dry Cherokee County.
While the vote was overwhelmingly in favor of the sales (649-234), Baptists in the area plan to continue fighting the legalization.
Robert Smith, pastor of First Baptist Church, Cedar Bluff, said the committee that campaigned against the move, Citizens Caring for Children, filed a lawsuit to fight the decision. The group believes the law passed by the Legislature earlier this year allowing for the wet/dry election is unconstitutional, he said. The law decreased the number of citizens in a city needed to hold a vote.
But Dan Ireland of Alabama Citizens Action Program (ALCAP) said, “The bill that permitted this is in conflict with the general state law and is less restrictive. I think there is a legal problem. …I’m encouraging them to pursue it.
