Washington — Lloyd J. Ogilvie, the 61st chaplain of the U.S. Senate, announced that he will resign on March 15 after eight years at that post. Ogilvie plans to move to Los Angeles to be with his wife, who is recovering from a lung ailment. “They will re-establish their residency there when Mrs. Ogilvie regains her health,” said David Corn, the chaplain’s chief of staff.
Sen. Trent Lott (R-Miss.) noted that Ogilvie has been a trusted counselor and “watchful shepherd” to many members over the years. Sen. Tom Daschle (D-S.D.), who will be replaced by Lott as Senate Majority Leader, said that Ogilvie “has been a real source of strength and comfort for countless members of the Senate family, from senators and staffers to elevator operators.”
Ogilvie himself emphasized that his role has always been “nonpolitical, nonpartisan and nonsectarian.”
