When a former member of Mountain Brook Baptist Church, Birmingham, who lives in New York alerted the church to some unmet needs from the devastation of Superstorm Sandy, church members went into action. It took only two weeks for the Birmingham Baptist Association (BBA) church to collect 152 boxes filled with clothing, shoes, winter coats, blankets, toiletries, cleaning supplies and baby supplies to be distributed to those impacted by Superstorm Sandy. In addition church members generously gave $45,000 in cash and gift cards.
“This ministry was our church’s disaster relief response,” said Wayne Splawn, an associate minister of Mountain Brook Baptist who coordinated the relief effort. “We had plenty of dedicated and excited church members who helped pack the boxes.”
Pat Ferguson is one of the members who helped with the boxes. “We felt this ministry project was a practical way we could show love to the hurting people of New York,” Ferguson said.
In his blog on the church’s website senior minister Doug Dortch commended the church for its graciousness and generosity toward “hurting folks, many of whom have lost everything.”
The boxes were shipped to the Arundel Baptist Association in Pasadena, Md. Shipping was arranged by BBA as part of an association-wide Superstorm Sandy disaster relief outreach. Through the Arundel Association, BBA has been in touch with the Sector NY Coast Guard unit, which is assessing needs and distributing items to people in need.
