Civil War Journalism Topic at Upcoming Hinson Lecture Series at University of Mobile

The University of Mobile’s (UMobile) Hinson Lecture Series will examine Civil War journalism with author Ford Risley.

Risley, a professor at Penn State University, will discuss “Blue and Gray in Black and White” on April 11 at 7 p.m. at Moorer Auditorium on UMobile’s campus.

According to Lonnie Burnett, professor of history at UMobile and director of the Billy G. Hinson Lecture Series, Risley will examine the press in the American Civil War.

Risley received his Ph.D. from the University of Florida and is the author of many scholarly articles and three books.

His most recent work, “Civil War Journalism,” has been described as “an extraordinarily well-written and insightful examination of the role of the Northern and Southern press during the nation’s most wrenching time of conflict.”

Prior to his tenure at Penn State, he worked as a reporter for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and was a freelance writer for The Dallas Morning News, New York Times and several other publications.
