Covington Association conference motivates youth

The nearly 350 students attending a conference sponsored by Covington Baptist Association and about 10 Andalusia-area churches July 17 were challenged to expand their ministry mind-sets.

Held at Southside Baptist Church, Andalusia, the conference featured leaders from Eagle’s Landing First Baptist Church, McDonough, Ga., who challenged youth to do more than just sit in church on Wednesday nights.

And the challenge seemed to work as Southside Baptist is already seeing students getting geared up and excited about starting new ministries, said Matt Tyler, minister of students at Southside.

They are “getting on-board with doing some more missions-minded events,” Tyler said, noting the church will probably start a drama team. He also said the youth are planning to start a praise team and a technical team.

Along with challenging the students, conference leaders also shared the gospel. “One salvation came from it that I know of,” Tyler said. “I count it as a 100 percent success if a salvation can come from an event like that.”

The conference featured music, dramatic skits, martial arts, puppets, a praise band and dance performances. Three musicians from Casting Crowns also took part.

“This event generated a lot of talk throughout the county,” Tyler said. “It was a huge success, and Southside Baptist Church and other churches in the community hope to host future events that will further encourage the students of Covington County to follow through with personal ministry.”
