Creationists, atheists use Times Square as battlefield

New York’s Times Square is in the middle of a billboard battle between creationists and atheists, CNN.com reported.

A new video billboard has recently been placed at 42nd Street and Eight Avenue paid for by Answers in Genesis that reads in part: “To all our atheist friends: Thank God you’re wrong.”

Answers in Genesis, a ministry behind the Creation Museum outside Cincinnati, Ohio, supports the case for Young Earth creationism (a literal interpretation of the book of Genesis in which the earth was created by God in six days less than 10,000 years ago).

Their video billboard was in response to an American Atheist billboard that was displayed at Christmas 2012 that read: “Keep the Merry, dump the myth,” according to CNN.com.

Ken Ham, president of Answers in Genesis, told CNN, “The Bible says to contend for the faith. We thought we should come up with something that would make a statement in the culture, a bold statement. … We’re not against (atheists) personally. … But we do believe they’re wrong.”

And Dave Silverman, president of American Atheists, told CNN that he felt sad for creationists when he read the billboard.

“(Creationists) refuse to look at the real world,” Silverman said. “They refuse to look at the evidence we have, and they offer none.”

Ham said a goal of the campaign is to draw people to the Answers in Genesis website, where he offers an in-depth post on his beliefs for the proof of God, CNN.com reported.
