As waters are receding around the Edisto River in South Carolina, Alabama Baptist Disaster Relief volunteers are hard at work helping area residents whose houses were flooded by Hurricane Debby on Aug. 3.

David Hendon, the ABDR white hat leader on site in Walterboro, South Carolina, said teams from Baldwin and Clarke Baptist associations have been doing mud-out work this weekend to clean out water-damaged homes.

“It’s a really good team of 11 people, and they’re getting it done,” he said. “They’re tearing out a house for a disabled veteran and making a difference.”

So far, they have around 10 job requests, but Hendon said waters are just beginning to recede in some areas, so they don’t know the full scope of the work yet.

‘Glad to be a part of it’

“We’re going back each day to see if we can go a little bit farther down the roads,” he said. “It may be Monday or Tuesday before we get into some of those areas and the end of the week before we get into others.”

Hendon said another team will be arriving Tuesday (Aug. 20) from St. Clair Baptist Association.

ABDR volunteers are headquartered at Bedon Baptist Church, which has been a “wonderful” host and is working to help collect five-gallon buckets full of cleaning supplies from nearby churches to distribute to area residents, he said.

Bedon Baptist is “keen on trying to follow up with all of the contacts that we make,” Hendon said, noting that ABDR volunteers also have a chaplain station set up.

“We’re just glad to be a part of it,” he said.
