Do not promote Lent

Do not promote Lent

I read in amazement the cover story of the Feb. 24 edition of The Alabama Baptist. Who would even believe the Catholic tradition [Lent], which has no Scripture basis, would be promoted and accepted into any Baptist church — another sign of a gradual drift from the Word of God being the only authority and guide of church practices.

Not once did our Lord command such a thing, nor can I find in the epistles where it is practiced or even mentioned.

In Matthew 6:16–18 we are told not to appear unto men to fast, but to wash our face and anoint our head with oil as not to appear to men to be fasting, but unto our Father. It’s going to take more than some ashes on a forehead to prove anybody is united with the Lord.
