If you like to procrastinate, your time might be about up — that is if you don’t want to get charged an extra $45 and a potentially lengthy screening process at the airport. The Transportation Security Administration announced Monday (Dec. 1) it plans to charge U.S. air travelers a $45 fee starting Feb. 1 if they arrive at airport security without a REAL ID — or another approved form of identification (more on that below).

Why the additional fee? The fee reportedly covers a 10-day travel period and uses TSA’s Confirm.ID system. Verification is not guaranteed, the TSA said.
When did all of this begin? REAL ID enforcement launched in May, and most already have them. The TSA reported 94% of passengers are compliant. NOTE: Alternative IDs, which include passports, military IDs and tribal IDs will continue to be approved — at least for now.
