Actor John Maxwell will perform the one-man monologue “Flower Child,” based on the life of John the Baptist, at Judson College in Marion Feb. 7 at 7 p.m. He will also conduct a workshop, Creating the Dramatic Monologue, Feb. 8 in Judson’s Ramsay-McCrummen Chapel.
The workshop would be a good resource for church drama groups and individuals interested in dramatic monologues, Judson officials said.
Maxwell is best known for his performance of the one-man show “Oh, Mr. Faulkner, Do You Write?,” but he also performs monologues based on religious figures.
“I love to present these characters in a dramatic format,” Maxwell said. “John the Baptist is probably the most entertaining one I do, along with Peter. The dialogue is mostly original, and, of course, all inspired by Scripture.”
He earned a master’s degree in theatre from the University of Mississippi in Oxford, Miss., and has been teaching on the college level for 12 years. Maxwell received a Tennessee Williams Scholarship to study playwriting with Tina Howe at the Sewanee Writer’s Conference and was the recipient of the Mississippi Arts Commission’s Susan B. Herron Playwriting Fellowship in 1992.
He is a member of both Actors’ Equity Association and Screen Actors Guild. Maxwell has appeared in television programs such as “Northern Exposure,” “Medicine Ball,” “Issaquena” and with Kim Delaney on the Lifetime channel.
