Election of officers, consideration of proposed resolutions part of upcoming annual meeting

Alabama Baptist messengers participating in the upcoming state convention annual meeting in Montgomery (see schedule, above) will have the opportunity to vote for convention officers and proposed resolutions.

The Alabama Baptist has confirmed one nominee for each position. No other nominees were known at press time.

For president: John Thweatt, pastor of First Baptist Church, Pell City, said if elected he would “look forward to working with Rick Lance and our state missionaries — an incredible group of people.”

John Killian, pastor of Maytown Baptist Church and former state convention president, will nominate Thweatt.

For first vice president: Tim Cox, pastor of Liberty Baptist Church, Chelsea, is “thankful to be in a position that I can give back and serve our state convention in any way possible, as a local pastor and as a convention officer.”

Kevin Blackwell, executive director of Samford University’s Ministry Training Institute and assistant to the president for church relations, will nominate Cox.

For second vice president: Two nominees have been announced for second vice president — Buddy Champion and Craig Carlisle.

Buddy Champion, pastor of First Baptist Church, Trussville, will be nominated by Teman Knight, pastor of Heritage Baptist Church, Montgomery.

Champion said, “It would be an honor to serve … if that is what God has in store for us in 2017.”

Craig Carlisle, pastor of Twelfth Street Baptist Church, Rainbow City, near Gadsden, will be nominated by Steve Loggins, director of missions for North Jefferson Baptist Association.

“As a lifelong Alabama Baptist, it would be a humbling honor to serve our convention in this capacity,” Carlisle said.

Along with electing new officers, Alabama Baptists will vote on resolutions presented by the Resolutions Committee.

Keith Hinson, the Alabama Baptist State Board of Missions’ resource liaison to the committee, noted that resolutions may be submitted to the convention’s recording secretary no later than the adjournment of the Nov. 15 morning session.

“The committee will be working to help the messengers say a helpful word on issues of concern from a biblical worldview,” Hinson said.

“Pray that Alabama Baptists will speak with consensus and conviction regarding moral issues our society is facing.”

Along with potential motions presented by messengers and other miscellaneous business during the two-day meeting, the State Board of Missions as well as the convention’s 15 other entities, auxiliaries, commissions and committees will deliver their annual reports to convention messengers.
