SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Susan Roberta Ryan, an emeritus Southern Baptist missionary to Chile, died Dec. 10. She was 82.
Born in Center Grove, she was appointed by the Foreign Mission Board (now International Mission Board) in 1945. Ryan taught elementary and secondary school, directed the Sunbeam Band children’s missions education program for Chile and helped direct publication of Woman’s Missionary Union materials in Spanish.
In 1961, she transferred to the Baptist Spanish Publishing House in El Paso, Texas, where she served until her retirement in 1987.
She was a graduate of Florence (Ala.) State Teachers College (now the University of North Alabama) and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas.
Prior to missionary appointment, Ryan taught public school in Alabama. She is the author of three books published by Convention Press: “Who? Me?” (1960), “Keep Telling the Story” (1963) and “The Claim Staker” (1977). She also was an accomplished artist and photographer. Ryan is survived by her brother-in-law, James H. Brockman of Spartanburg, S.C.
