Betty Johnson worked at Fairmount Baptist Church in Red Level for nearly a quarter of the church’s existence. That isn’t a small thing, considering that the church just celebrated its 200th anniversary. She has a lot of stories about the church.
So when everyone got together to tell stories and celebrate the church’s bicentennial Oct. 10, it was a great day, said Johnson, who recently retired after 46 years as church clerk. “Everyone thoroughly enjoyed it.”
Terry Liles, who grew up in the church, was the guest speaker for the day, and Steve Bailey, who serves as minister to youth and students, presented the history of the church. The family of Pastor John Bell sang, and his son Caleb, who serves as minister of music, led congregational singing.
Ellen Dewberry of the Alabama Baptist Historical Commission presented the church with a certificate, photo album and scrapbook of special events compiled by Johnson was on display during the event.
