FBC Union Springs’ music minister Heitman announces retirement

John Heitman used to fill in as a music director for churches when they needed it, and one Sunday in 1997 he was sent to First Baptist Church, Union Springs. They asked him to stay and be the interim. Then they said, “Why don’t you just stay and do this all the time?”

“It’s really been a lot of fun,” Heitman said of his 22-year run as the church’s minister of music. Heitman is retiring at the end of August so he and his wife, Carolyn, can move closer to their children and grandchildren in the Carolinas.

“It’s been very rewarding,” he said. “One thing I’ve really enjoyed seeing is the transition of the church. We had a lot of older people and now it’s a lot of young married people with kids.”

Bill Cannon, pastor of First, Union Springs, said it has been a joy to serve alongside Heitman.

“John is faithful to the Lord, always focused on glorifying the Lord, and dependable,” Cannon said. “He will be missed by me and the church. He is one of the best there is as a husband, father, servant and friend.” (Grace Thornton)
