‘Game Plan’ available to churches

Game Plan, the annual four page issue devoted to sports evangelism produced by The Alabama Baptist, is now available for purchase.

This year’s edition features stories and photos of The University of Alabama (UA) Crimson Tide running back Brandon Miree and former Auburn University and Seattle Seahawk rookie fullback Heath Evans. Miree is battling for a starting job on the Crimson Tide football team while Evans is attemptimg to win a spot on the Seahawk roster.

Also highlighted is Jay Barker, former UA quarterback and most recently a member of the Birmingham Bolts of the now extinct Extreme Football League (XFL). Barker tells of his experiences in the XFL and his new job as a sports talk show co-host on a radio station.

In addition to these testimonies, other athletes who share about how their faith impacts their lives are Georgia head coach Mark Richt, whose life is impacted daily by Bobby Bowden, head coach of Florida State University; Homewood High School Patriot quarterback Bragg Knott, member of the Patriots’ 2000 state championship team who will be part of the dual quarterback system for the team this season; and Bob Stoops, head coach of the University of Oklahoma (OU) who is regarded as one of the best upcoming young coaches.

In addition to testimonies from athletes, GamePlan includes photographs, and easy-to-follow plan of salvation, and new this year, schedules from both UA and Auburn. Available for only 25 cents each with a minimum order of 25, the deadline to place orders is Aug. 10.

Many find GamePlan an excellent witnessing tool.

Stephen Hall, youth minister at Smoke Rise Baptist Church in Warrior, passed out Game Plan during an outreach event before a football game last year. He witnessed many reading the issue in the stands. “I overheard quite a few talking about how neat [GamePlan} was,” said Hall, who especially like the new addition of the Auburn and Alabama schedules in this year’s issue.

Carter Whiteside, music director at Fairview Baptist Church in Athens, said his church saw GamePlan as an opportunity to present the plan of salvation before the local high school football game. Church members distributed the issues. Whiteside said the majority of those who received GamePlan were enthusiastic about the newspaper.
