Gov. Ivey: Deadline to apply for internship program March 13

Governor Kay Ivey on Monday (March 9) reminded college students across Alabama that Friday is the deadline to apply for the Governor’s Office Summer Internship Program. The nine-week program offers students a unique opportunity to gain firsthand experience in state government while working alongside professionals in the executive branch.

“As a former teacher, I know the value of hands-on learning, and this internship program gives Alabama students a front-row seat to how state government works,” said Governor Ivey. “Each summer, our interns bring fresh ideas, strong work ethic and a passion for serving our state, and I encourage any student interested in public service to apply before Friday’s deadline.”

Samantha Simmons, a summer 2024 intern in the Governor’s Office and a junior at The University of Alabama, was recently elected the 115th president of The University of Alabama Student Government Association.

Lasting impact

Simmons affirms the program leaves a lasting impact well beyond the summer experience.

“Working for Governor Ivey and her team has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my college career. I had the opportunity to intern in the Governor’s communications department, where I gained real-world experience every single day. From the moment you join the team, you’re trusted with meaningful work,” she said.

“I helped draft press releases, media advisories and social media content and contributed to a wide range of communications projects that supported the Governor’s Office.”

She noted, “What stood out most about my time in Governor Ivey’s office was how much the team genuinely cared about their interns. The staff invested time in mentoring us and ensuring we were learning and growing throughout the experience. Even after my internship ended, I’ve stayed in touch with many of the people I worked with, which speaks volumes about the supportive and welcoming culture they’ve built.

“If you care about making a difference in Alabama and are ready to work, I highly recommended applying.”

Eligible applicants must be current college students with a strong interest in public service and government. Selected interns will work directly with staff, participate in special projects and have the chance to engage in key issues impacting Alabama.

The internship will run from June 2–July 31. The deadline to apply is March 13 by close of business.

“Seeing former interns like Samantha go on to take on leadership roles is exactly what this program is all about,” added Governor Ivey. “She is a bright young leader, and I am proud to see her representing Alabama students so well. I have no doubt her future, and the future of my previous and next class of interns, is incredibly bright.”
