The Art of Translation

Grits (Grammatical Revolution In the Spirit) is perhaps the premiere act in contemporary Christian hip-hop. Though the genre is relatively small and does not carry the weight of its pop and rock counterparts, it continues to be an important means of communicating the message of the gospel to a vast number of listeners. Artists like GRITS are presenting their message in a way that is both creative and sincere.
“The Art of Translation” is an amazing display of diversity of styles within the genre of hip-hop. Members Bonafide (Teron Carter) and Coffee (Stacy Jones) flex their lyrical prowess on songs like the Latin-flavored “Here We Go” and guitar driven “Seriously.”
The duo also invited artists like Nirva Dorsaint, Jennifer Knapp, and dcTalk’s TobyMac to appear on various tracks throughout the album.
Lyrically, the album covers a broad range of topics that are relevant to the Christian life. “Ooh Aah” is a track that deals with repentance and forgiveness. Christian marriage is the theme of the song “Be Mine.” “Video Girl” candidly tackles the issue of self-image.
“The Art of Translation” is one of the most well-produced, creative projects to date in the realm of Christian hip-hop. The members of GRITS also prove themselves to be contemplative and insightful in the ways in which they express their message and their faith through their music.
