Georgia
The Georgia Baptist Conference Center in Toccoa, operating at a loss for the past 20 years, will be offered for sale on the real estate market, The Christian Index reported. Purchased in 1963 by the Georgia Baptist Convention, the camp is projected to lose $1.1 million this year, partially due to the pandemic lockdown, and currently needs a projected $8.31 million in repairs. Operations at the camp will be suspended Sept. 30.
Florida
Three Florida Baptist churches recently partnered to provide essential items, such as diapers, shampoo and detergent, to hundreds of families coping with financial setbacks caused by the pandemic. Parkridge Church in Coral Springs, Florida, hosted the event, along with Chinese Baptist Church of Coral Springs, Florida, and Cross United Church in Lighthouse Point, Florida. Local ministries “Food for the Poor” and “Matthew 25: Ministries” also participated in the distribution, the Florida Baptist Witness reported.
Louisiana
Trinity Baptist Church in Lake Charles, Louisiana, has become a hub for community outreach after Hurricane Laura cut a swath of destruction through the city of 78,000 on Aug. 27. The church is reaching into the community with clean-up efforts, provision of 20,000 meals a day and distribution of food and other necessities donated by church members and the community. As of Sept. 10, the site had registered 115 professions of faith, Louisiana’s Baptist Message reported.
Mississippi
Mississippi Baptist Disaster Relief teams are preparing for their second mobilization of the season as Hurricane Sally made landfall Sept. 16 in Gulf Shores, Alabama. At the same time, Mississippi Baptists still are responding with relief efforts in Louisiana, following Hurricane Laura’s landfall on Aug. 27, Mississippi’s Baptist Record reported. “God is at work, even in the destruction of the storm,” said Hubert Yates, interim disaster relief coordinator for Mississippi Baptists.
Tennessee
Pro-life advocate Abby Johnson spoke recently in the chapel on Union University’s campus in Jackson, Tennessee, the Baptist and Reflector (Tennessee) reported. During the evening event, hosted by the Union University Auxiliary, Johnson stated that almost a million abortions are performed annually in America. “[God] put you here for one reason and one reason alone, and that was to evangelize His gospel, and part of His gospel is the gospel of life,” she said.
