It is a joy when I consider the blessings that God has bestowed on Southern Baptists through the years as we have strived to advance His Kingdom. I am alarmed, however, at the rush to use the Holman Christian Standard Bible as a basis for Sunday School literature.
Having been an active layman for over 50 years, I have always supported the work and policies of the Baptist Sunday School Board (BSSB). When LifeWay Christian Resources took over, I expected it to continue the spirit-led policies of the BSSB. The adoption of the Holman Christian Standard Bible as the basis of Sunday School literature at this early stage can only be a merchandising decision. Mr. Phillips recognized the fact that “new translations take time to gain acceptance,” yet he considers it a favor to our churches to have literature based on a translation still in progress to teach from.
