John G. Horton has been appointed as operations associate for Shocco Springs Baptist Conference Center, which is Alabama’s largest religious-owned retreat facility.
Horton moves to Alabama from New Mexico’s Glorieta Conference Center — a complex owned by LifeWay Christian Resources of the Southern Baptist Convention. During 20 years’ employment at Glorieta, Horton served in a variety of posts, most recently as assistant general manager. “We are pleased to have John joining our management team,” said Buster Taylor, Shocco’s executive director.
“He brings a wealth of conference center experience which we believe will be helpful as we blend the best of both our experiences to better serve our guests.”
Horton is a graduate of Middle Tennessee State University where he majored in mass communications and minored in management. He and his wife, Paula, have a daughter Kendra, 10, and a son Adam, 9.
In New Mexico, Horton’s family was active in First Baptist Church, Santa Fe, where he was a deacon, a member of the administration committee, and the sound/technical coordinator.
“I am truly excited about joining the Shocco staff,” Horton said. “For years, I have heard great things about Shocco’s team, the facilities and the ministry here. I pray that together we will build on what has been accomplished in the past and expand this ministry for the future.”
During 2001, Shocco hosted 506 conferences with more than 45,690 guests from various churches, denominations, specialized ministry groups, and a variety of other educational, governmental, business, and non-profit organizations.
With an annual budget of more than $4 million, Shocco’s facility includes 430 capacity dorm-type cabins, 950 capacity motel-type rooms, a 730-seat chapel, a 500-seat dining room, 43 conference rooms, a swimming pool and a 12-acre lake. Shocco Springs is located on the web at www.shocco.org or may be contacted at 1-800-280-1105. (Shocco)
