Brittany Howerton has joined The Alabama Baptist as staff writer, filling a position that has been vacant since May 2007.
A native of Church Hill, Tenn., Howerton is a May graduate of Union University in Jackson, Tenn., where she served as managing editor of Cardinal & Cream campus newspaper.
Howerton earned a bachelor of arts there in public relations/advertising with a minor in Christian studies. Union named her its Most Outstanding Public Relations Student two years in a row and gave her its Best News Writing Award for 2006–2007.
UWIRE, a free membership organization for college student media, recently named Howerton among the top 100 collegiate journalists in the nation.
“We are pleased to welcome Brittany to the editorial staff of The Alabama Baptist,” said Jennifer Davis Rash, managing editor. “Her energy, enthusiasm and experience will be a great fit for our team. We have worked one staff member short for 14 months, but we felt strongly that we should weigh all applicants carefully and wait on just the right person for the position. We believe we have found that person in Brittany.”
In addition to her work with Cardinal & Cream, Howerton served as director assistant in the university’s department of leadership development and a Tennessee travel team leader for the Tennessee Baptist Convention, coordinating trips to churches to conduct Vacation Bible School and other types of children’s camps.
At The Alabama Baptist, her main responsibility will be news and feature writing.
She will also work with photography, layout and design and various special projects. (TAB)
