‘In God We Trust’ to stay on US currency

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — A ruling in Ohio has upheld the constitutionality of having “In God We Trust” on the national currency of the United States, according to The Christian Post.

District Court Judge Benita Y. Pearson of the Northern District of Ohio stopped a move by atheist activist Michael Newdow to strike the motto from being printed on money. In a Nov. 30 ruling, Pearson said the Religious Freedom Restoration Act — which Newdow’s group of plaintiffs was claiming — was not applicable because they “cannot demonstrate that the use of the motto on currency substantially burdens their religious exercise.”

She also wrote that using currency with the motto printed on it does not mean they are being forced to support a religious message: “No reasonable viewer would think a person handling money does so to spread its religious message.” (TAB)
