Billy Isom served as church treasurer for 29 years before retiring in November 2006. To show appreciation for his years of service, Evergreen Baptist Church, Vance, held Billy Isom Day and presented him with gift certificates and plaques.

Q: Why did you retire?
A: I was in a terrible car accident in 1998 and I almost died. I have a nerve pulled loose in my spinal cord, and I have constant nerve pain in my fingers. I toughed it out until this past year, and I had to give it up.

Q: Why did you continue doing it through the years?
A: We started building a new church about eight years ago. I just felt like the Lord was leading me to continue to help out with it because I couldn’t help with the any of the building they were doing.

Q: What did the ministry demand?
A: I paid all the bills, made all the bank deposits, filled out all the quarterly and yearly reports. The main thing was keeping up with the money every week — the building fund and the regular fund. It was a good bit of work to it.

Q: What did you get from the ministry?
A: It made me feel like I was doing something for the Lord. I’m not really a teacher, but I could do that job. In all of the 29 years I did it, I always balanced to the penny.

Q: How did family members support you?
A: My wife was a lot of help. She would help me balance at the end of the month no matter how long it took. I also got good support from all my kids.
