James Waddell had been serving for a while as a deacon in his home church, but in 1976, he felt like God was calling him to something else.
“We had a revival, and I professed my call to the ministry during that time,” Waddell said. “The visiting evangelist said, ‘God called you to preach?’ I said, ‘Yes, sir.’ And he said, ‘I want you to fill the pulpit for me.’”
That started a pastoral ministry that lasted until Waddell’s recent retirement from First Baptist Church, Anderson, where he’s served for the past six years. Before that, he served at several other churches, including Springfield Baptist, Rogersville; Evergreen Baptist, Florence; and 21 years at New Hope Baptist, Rogersville.
“It’s been a joy to be able to serve where I’ve served,” Waddell said.
In retirement, he and his wife, Linda, will serve as members of First Baptist Church, Rogersville. He also plans to fill in as a supply preacher where needed.
