Japan OKs embryonic stem cell research

Japan has given the green light to researchers involved in embryonic stem cell research. On Aug. 1, a Japanese Cabinet panel approved experimentation of human embryos and also set down guidelines that researchers are required to follow- one of which is a ban on human cloning. According to those guidelines, stem cells used in the research could only be taken from those created for fertility treatments. Scientists say stem cells are one of the building blocks of the human body and have the potential to grow into various kinds of tissue. In the U.S., scientists and religious leaders have voiced opposition to the use of embryonic stem cells, claiming that the practice is unethical.
