Louise Johnson began teaching Sunday School when she was 18 years old. Now 77 years later, her pace has slowed a bit, but Johnson still teaches a senior adult class at First Baptist Church, Gulf Shores. Through the years, she worked for the state of Alabama and traveled around the state and country teaching church youth leadership training courses. Johnson also traveled throughout the Orient, teaching and filling in for missionaries on furlough.
Q: What was your childhood like?
A: It was a pleasant childhood, but one based definitely around the church. It was a time when you didn’t have money, and the church was your recreation and everything else.
Q: How did you come to know the Lord?
A: Through the young people in the neighborhood when I was 15.
Q: What led you to begin teaching Sunday School?
A: My own teacher moved away, and we were without a teacher. I started what they considered leading the discussion.
Q: What did you get from this ministry?
A: It’s very fulfilling. It’s life itself. The church is my life.
Q: How have churches changed over the years?
A: You never dreamed some of the things that are allowed in worship today. … We felt that standing still and knowing God is God was important. We felt that was an act of worship and giving was an act of worship. Tithing was very important.
Q: How do you see yourself involved in Sunday School in the future?
A: I have had to curtail much of my activity. As long as the Lord allows me, I’ll be there.
Q: What difference has this ministry made in your life?
A: It’s given me a perspective I would not have had otherwise — an interest in the things that are important and giving me an idea of what’s of value. Life’s values are not measured in material things but in doing the will of the Lord.
