Judson Singers perform at Carnegie

The Judson College choir, the “Judson Singers,” presented a concert at New York’s Carnegie Hall Jan. 20. This is the first time a Judson music group has performed there, according to college President David Potts.

“The choir was invited to sing more than a year ago,” said Jeanine Skinner of the college’s fine arts division. “The preparation was intense and consumed many hours. We added an additional weekly rehearsal last fall and an additional daily rehearsal after Christmas break. Our students worked very hard,” he said.

The Judson Singers performed a solo concert and then joined seven other choirs from around the nation for the singing of Mozart’s Coronation Mass. The mass choir included members of the sanctuary choir from First Baptist Church, Dothan.

“We presented a wide range of pieces in the half-hour concert,” Skinner said. “We did classical, contemporary and spiritual [pieces]. The choir also sang in English, Latin and German.”

All three members of the music faculty who attended shared in the performance. Roger Walworth did most of the conducting and played the trumpet. Skinner was primary pianist, assisted by student Laura Jones. Betty Campbell also conducted. The professors sang with the mass choir following Judson’s solo concert.

“Our students were messengers and models of Christian womanhood,” Skinner said. “The spontaneous standing ovation from the audience and the kind remarks from Carnegie officials were a real tribute to our Judson women.”

Campbell agreed, “Our students looked like a million dollars in appearance, performance and deportment.”

“It was a spiritual moment, and God was honored that night in New York.” (JC)
