The Sermon Maker,” a workshop for pastors, will be held at Judson College Jan. 22.
Calvin Miller from the Beeson Divinity School of Samford University, will teach the seminar which is modeled on his recently published book of the same title. The conference is jointly sponsored by Judson and the office of LeaderCare and church administration of the Alabama Baptist State Board of Missions.
Miller is professor of preaching and pastoral studies at Beeson. He serves on the editorial boards of several publications, including Leadership magazine, Preaching magazine and the “Library of Distinctive Sermons.” He is a popular lecturer on preaching, having spoken at 19 seminaries and delivered Staley Lectures at more than 50 colleges and universities.
Miller believes modern preachers must deliver sermons with 21st-century images and illustrations. “Biblical truth is timeless,” he said, “but the way each generation hears and appropriates truth is quite different. As Warren Wiersbe noted, ‘Sermons are getting shorter, preaching is getting more personal, and the preacher has to be more open and more transparent.’”
Activities on Jan. 22 begin with coffee and registration at 10:30 a.m., followed by worship with Miller at 11:10. The seminar itself will be from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. Judson College will provide lunch for attendees, and the office of LeaderCare will give a complimentary copy of “The Sermon Maker” to participants.
There is no charge for the conference, but the registration deadline is Jan. 19. Registration may be done on line at www.alsbom.org/ or by calling the office of LeaderCare and church administration at 1-800-264-1225. Directions to Judson College may be found at www.judson.edu/stay.html/. (JC)
