Longtime pastor Vince Whittington dies Aug. 31

Vince Whittington, a longtime Alabama Baptist pastor, died Aug. 31. He was 79.

Whittington served as senior pastor and interim pastor of churches in Alabama, Texas and Georgia for more than 45 years. He retired from First Baptist Church Glencoe in 2007.

Before coming to FBC Glencoe, Whittington served as pastor of First Baptist Church Monroeville (1981–1990); First Baptist Church Oxford (1991–1993); and Macedonia Baptist Church in Gadsden (1994–1998).

He graduated from Campbell University in Buies Creek, North Carolina, in 1969 and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas, in 1976.

Over the years, he went on missions trips in other states as well as Australia, Spain, the Canary Islands, Nigeria and Honduras.

Whittington is survived by his wife of almost 59 years, Lynda; daughters, Teresa and Kristie; son, Mark; chosen son, David; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
