Maples, Posey Edward “P.E.”

Posey Edward “P.E.” Maples, a pastor of Alabama and Tennessee churches for more than 54 years, died Dec. 22. He was 92.

A native of Owens Cross Roads, Maples served churches in Marshall, Madison, Jackson and Limestone counties, as well as several churches in Tennessee.

Though his health hindered him from preaching in his last years of life, he continued to minister by visiting the sick and their loved ones.

Maples was active in associational work and involved in many Baptist leadership roles throughout his ministry. He served as moderator of Marshall Baptist Association in 1969 and 1970 and Tennessee River Baptist Association in 1976, 1977 and 1980. He also served as chairman of Marshall Association’s temperance and evangelism committees and represented Tennessee River Association on the Alabama Baptist State Convention executive board from 1974 to 1977. In 1976, he was appointed an honorary member of the lieutenant governor’s staff.

Maples was preceded in death by his first wife, Mildred Kelly Maples; two sons; two grandchildren; and two stepchildren. He is survived by his wife, Katherine Downs Maples; 11 children; 25 grandchildren; a host of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; three stepchildren; seven stepgrandchildren; and several step-great-grandchildren. (TAB)
