Megginson, Mitford Ray Sr.

Retired Alabama Baptist pastor Mitford Ray Megginson Sr. died Jan. 6. He was 90.

Born in Thomasville, Megginson was a graduate of Mississippi College in Clinton and New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary.

After being ordained as a Southern Baptist minister in 1940, he served as pastor of multiple churches across Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana. His Alabama pastorates included First Baptist Church, Bayou La Batre, and Cottage Hill Baptist Church, Mobile, both in Mobile Baptist Association, and Daphne Baptist Church and First Baptist Church, Spanish Fort, both in Baldwin Baptist Association.

Megginson also served as director of missions for Union County Baptist Association in the Mississippi Delta region.

After his retirement from First, Spanish Fort, in 1983, he wrote the book “Mud on My Shoes,” a story of his life and ministries.

Megginson, along with his two brothers and sister, established the W.A. Megginson Foundation at the University of Mobile to further Christian education.

He is survived by his wife, Cleo Ruth Faggard Megginson; four children; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. (TAB)
