Lloyd Livingston Smith Jr. — a minister and musical composer who served in Alabama, Florida and Tennessee — died Feb. 8. He was 93.
A native of Prichard, Smith gave his life to Christ at age 12. He was a charter member of Shiloh Baptist Church in Saraland and felt a call to full-time ministry at age 25. He graduated from Tennessee Temple University in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Over the years, he served in ministry in the areas of music, youth and education in churches in Alabama, Florida and Tennessee.
In 1970, he and close friend Jack Parker established Staff of Life Publications. Smith composed more than 300 choral numbers and numerous choruses and solos. The company has published and distributed more than 2 million copies of music.
Smith is preceded in death by his first wife, Helen, who died in 1999. He is survived by his second wife, Faith Ann; his daughter, Shirley; sons, Lloyd and Bob; stepsons Dan and David; stepdaughter Kathy; 17 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
