During the recent response to Hurricane Charley, Mississippi Baptist disaster relief volunteers had the privilege of ministering together with volunteers from the Alabama Baptist disaster relief team. What a joy to serve with them.
While the two groups had never worked together previously, they quickly became a team. Both groups were well trained and had quality leadership. In no time, Alabama and Mississippi were working together as if they had been friends for years. They ministered by cooking more than 8,000 meals per day. They also supported the work of chainsaw and recovery groups from both states.
They worked together, prayed together, laughed and cried together. God worked to bring a deep respect and admiration for each other.
While Hurricane Charley brought huge devastation to Florida, the Alabama/Mississippi disaster relief team brought the hope of Jesus Christ to many hurting people.
We, in Mississippi, hope a long time will pass before another disaster response is needed. But when it comes, know that we would count it an honor to serve alongside our brothers and sisters from Alabama.
