My Jesus Story

My Jesus Story

There are so many things that I want to talk about when I think about how Jesus has worked in my life but one thing I want to talk about this week is stepping out of your comfort zone. Jesus is completely God, yes, but He also is human.

This means there were times in His perfect life that He felt uncomfortable as He experienced every emotion we experience.

My husband and I were granted the opportunity to serve with our church on a missions trip. For me this is not only a matter of faith but also a matter of obedience, and I was very uncomfortable about it. I am a person who likes a set routine and I like my alone time. In our last meeting before the trip, our pastor said the key to any missions trip was to be flexible. Me? Flexible? Um, OK — very far out of my comfort zone, but I convinced myself I could do it. And I did, by the grace of God.

I imagine one of the times Jesus felt uncomfortable was at the wedding at Cana (John 2:1–12). His mother asked Him to perform a miracle. He was in a position to obey His mother and perform this miracle or decide whether to wait for His time to come. He chose to obey His mother, but I would have been very uncomfortable. After all, this was unplanned.

The point is, if we honor God with what we do, meaning we obey His commands like “honor your mother and father,” then we do the right thing. Even if we have to bend and be flexible, even if we are not comfortable, God’s way is always the right way.
