My Rashionale: Epic superhero movie all the rave — how should we respond?

Ten-plus years and 22 movies later, the epic conclusion to Marvel’s Infinity Saga finally hit theaters.

“Avengers: Endgame” is being hailed as the greatest superhero movie of all time by numerous critics and Marvel Cinematic Universe loyalists.

If you aren’t a superhero movie fan no worries — think Super Bowl, College Football Playoff National Championship or the likes of a royal wedding and you’ll understand the anticipation and fanfare.

My husband, Jason, and our nephews and nieces turned me on to these rescue-the-universe adventure movies a few years ago. Sometimes Jason and I get to watch a new release with a nephew or niece; sometimes we double date with friends.

For “Avengers: Endgame” it was only the two of us amid a packed theater at a late-night showing on opening night, April 25.

And wow — the writers, editors and producers did not disappoint. The movie definitely lived up to all the hype.

The movie is rated PG-13 with the expected violence in a movie of this type and some mild language scattered throughout.

Still many of us power through the somewhat uncomfortable moments for the overall experience.

And when we are trying to determine what movies are OK for the children in our lives to see, the reviews provided by family-friendly media groups are a great resource.

The Alabama Baptist (TAB) started offering a similar resource of reviewing movies and TV shows about a year and a half ago.

Our goal is for the Media Reviews section to provide a help for Christian living.

For some this means strict entertainment limits and no TV, movies or books that aren’t marketed as Christian; for others it means looking at entertainment through a Jesus lens according to the Spirit’s leading.

Michael Foust serves as our movie and TV reviewer. His specialty is critiquing entertainment through a Jesus lens — trying to help all readers know what is available so they can make informed decisions. From there parents also can help their kids make better choices too.

Our challenge is to reach a broad demographic of readers with our content. Providing resources like Media Reviews is an example of how we do that.

One reader recently commented: “It’s important for all Baptists to engage the world and seek to be in it but not of it. With so many engaging in TV without confronting worldliness in those shows, equipping and encouraging believers to think through what they watch is a welcomed practice. I’ve found [the review section] very useful on several occasions.”

Which movies are OK for Christian families to watch? How do we guard our hearts and minds amid a media-saturated world? Are we teaching the children in our lives how to make wise choices?

TAB hopes to help you think through these and so many other real-life issues as we share resources to assist in the decision-making process.
