Back in 1840, 11 people decided there needed to be a church on Five Mile Creek. Now 180 years later, New Hope Baptist Church, Moundville, still meets. The congregation celebrated that milestone anniversary Aug. 23 with a special service.
New Hope Baptist built its current building more than 130 years ago after the original log building burned, and by God’s grace they’re still meeting there today, said church member Faye Colburn.
“We had a great day,” said Colburn, whose husband, Eugene, has kept up with the church’s history and sketched its buildings for the church records. She was saved at the church in 1960 and finds her life’s story intertwined with that of New Hope Baptist.
“The church was our life,” Colburn said. “In the 1950s, Sundays were set aside for worship and study of God’s word. The highlight of the year was the revival.”
The week before the revival, the men of the church would gather under a brush arbor and pray, she said. “I live up the road from the church, and we could hear them praying for hours.”
