Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee signed the Unborn Child Dignity Act into law recently.
The bill, which will go into effect July 1, passed the Senate 27-6 and House 69-22. It requires abortion facilities to provide for the burial or cremation of babies’ bodies.
One of the bill’s sponsors, state Sen. Janice Bowling, said, “It’s a tragedy in Tennessee that we regulate how veterinarians properly dispose of the remains of animals, but there are no regulations regarding human babies.”
Approximately 862,320 abortions occurred in the U.S. in 2017, and 12,140 were in Tennessee, according to pro-choice research group Guttmacher Institute.
Currently, 11 states require burial or cremation of aborted fetal remains.
