Officers to be re-nominated for second terms

Although there are no known contested elections taking place at this year’s Alabama Baptist State Convention (ABSC) annual meeting, the nominations and elections are just as important.

The Alabama Baptist has confirmed the following pastors are being re-nominated as ABSC officers.

For president: Travis Coleman Jr., pastor of First Baptist Church, Prattville, will be nominated by Rick Marshall, pastor of Eastern Hills Baptist Church, Montgomery.

Coleman said, “If the messengers so please I’ll look forward to serving a second term. I have enjoyed serving the first year and one of the great highlights was attending a number of meetings of various entities and getting to know the diversity of people across the state that have a passion for their assignment.”

For first vice president: John Thweatt, pastor of First Baptist Church, Pell City, said he would be willing to be nominated for a second term as first vice president and said it would be a privilege to do so. Buddy Gray, pastor of Hunter Street Baptist Church, Hoover, will nominate Thweatt.

For second vice president: Tim Cox, pastor of Liberty Baptist Church, Chelsea, also confirmed he will be nominated for a second term as second vice president. Greg Pouncey, pastor of First Baptist Church, Tillman’s Corner, in Mobile, will nominate him.

Elections will take place Nov. 18 during the ABSC annual meeting at Eastern Shore Baptist Church, Daphne (see schedule, above).

Along with electing new officers, Alabama Baptists will vote on proposed resolutions.

At press time, no resolutions had been submitted to the resolutions committee, according to James Sampley, chairman of the committee and minister of senior adults and missions for CrossPoint Baptist Church, Trussville.

Landscape of nation

“You can see the landscape of what’s going on in our nation and world and be able to tell what resolutions will likely be turned in,” Sampley said.

Every submitted resolution, he said, will be carefully looked over by the committee and “given the care it deserves and prayed over.”

Resolutions may by submitted to the convention’s recording secretary by the adjournment of the opening session of the annual meeting Nov. 17.
