Christy Olinger is someone you should know because she is the reigning Miss Rodeo Alabama for 2003.
Q: How did you become Miss Rodeo Alabama?
A: Every year in the state of Alabama the Southeastern Livestock Exposition puts a PRCA-sanctioned rodeo in Montgomery. The Miss Rodeo Alabama pageant is held in conjunction with that rodeo every March. You are judged on appearance, horsemanship, public speaking ability and several interviews.
Q: What does it demand of you?
A: I travel to television interviews and live radio broadcasts, sign autograph sheets for small children, carry the American flag at the beginning of the rodeo and visit top PRCA rodeos across the nation. I also travel across the state to different rodeos and promote agriculture and livestock industries in Alabama.
Q: What do you get from it?
A: It has been awesome to meet the people that I have come into contact with. It also gives me an awesome opportunity to be a role model for young children.
Q: What led you to rodeo?
A: I’ve shown horses all my life, and growing up on a farm around horses I just have a great love for them. In 1997 I began carrying flags, then competing in local rodeo queen contests, and I advanced to compete in Miss Rodeo Alabama.
Q: What differences will it make for you in the future?
A: It is a character builder (and) the friendships that I have made with other state queens will be lifelong friendships.
Q: How has it strengthened your faith?
A: It’s always been something I wanted to do, and God has given me the talent and patience to get here. It is so rewarding in the end.
