Pointing the finger

Pointing the finger

I am 65 years old, have received The Alabama Baptist newspaper for “centuries” and have never written a letter to the editor. However, the editorial by Bob Terry in the June 26 issue titled “SBC Resolution Takes the Wrong Approach” warrants a response.

Dr. Terry hit the nail squarely on the head when he said we as Baptists, yes, even as Christians, are so eager to point the finger in the wrong direction. At the very time new Christians and new church members need our support, encouragement and direction, we are given to judgment, criticism and sarcasm. It is sad, but so very true, that the church is the place where people can be made to feel most unwelcome by the self-righteous, pious and pharisaical religious people we so often allow ourselves to become. And the size of the church does not seem to make a difference; it happens in the megachurch, and it happens in the small country church located at the crossroads.

Thank you, Dr. Terry, for having the courage to point out the painful truth. May God bless you as you continue His work through your paper.
