Poverty education topic of meeting for Christian community ministers

The complexities of poverty and how churches can become involved was one of the topics of the Alabama Network of Christian Community Ministers (ANCCM) annual meeting Nov. 17 in Montgomery.

Nick Foster, former director of Alabama Poverty Project, provided ideas for how the church can become educated about poverty.

Utilizing the Alabama Poverty Project Resource Web site  (www.alabamapoverty.org) is a way ministries can find pertinent information not only about Alabama but also their specific county.

Attendees were encouraged to educate themselves even more about poverty in Alabama in order to communicate the need to churches.

ANCCM also heard from Jean White, church and community coordinator in the ministry evangelism group at the North American Mission Board.

She shared how to assess your community needs and why it is so important to do this.

“In order to be effective in your community, you need to know what the needs are,” she said. “And you find that out from the community.”

Resources for doing a community survey can be found at www.namb.net/ccm.
