Providence diocese settles with abuse victims

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The Roman Catholic Diocese of Providence (R.I.) has announced a $13.5 million settlement that will end three dozen sex-abuse claims against its clergy.

“I hope that this action will be helpful to the victims of abuse and bring them in some way closer to closure and reconciliation with their God, their church, their families and themselves,” said the Most Rev. Robert E. Mulvee, the bishop of Providence, on Sept. 9.

The victims welcomed an apology that accompanied the settlement, the Associated Press reported.

A lawyer for some of the 36 male and female victims of sex abuse congratulated diocesan officials for their actions to resolve the cases.

The settlement addresses all but two of the women and men who sued the diocese in the early 1990s, claiming that 11 priests and a nun abused them when they were children.
