You are accurate in your assessment that parents, the church and the school system all have a hand in educating our children with the primary responsibility resting on the parent. If we parents remain apathetic and nonparticipatory in the schooling process, no amount of money or legislation or government programs will generate academic success.
Your editorial touched upon the history of public schools. The attempts of the Catholic Church and the monarchy at the time (circa 1600) to keep the common people from knowledge are well documented.
What concerns me today is federal government involvement in the education system. In our nation’s history, the Founding Fathers did not think it expedient to allow Congress to have powers to regulate education; yet federal influence continues to take precedent over the desires of the local community.
