RA soapbox derby rolls down Alabama capitol’s streets

The streets in front of the state capitol were filled with traffic Oct. 18, but it wasn’t metal and engines. It was made of wood and powered by good old-fashioned elbow grease and gravity.

The Royal Ambassadors (RAs) were in town, zipping around Montgomery during the fourth annual RA State Soapbox Derby.

Drawing a crowd of nearly 350 participants, relatives and friends the RAs raced to the finish lines in the Lad, Crusader and Youth divisions, said Steve Stephens, RA consultant with the State Board of Missions.

Besides races, RAs in grades 1 through 12 showed off their cars in the categories of Best Looking and Most Unique.

Ebenezer Baptist Church, Vinemont, won the Best of Race award for crowd and church participation.
