Dixie Roberts has worked for nearly 20 years with her church’s Woman’s Missionary Union and shut-in ministries since retiring from teaching. At age 77, she has also taught Sunday School since she joined First, Oxford, 42 years ago. For the past 20 years, Roberts has also volunteered with a local nursing home and Meals on Wheels.

Q: What led you to begin volunteering?
A: Having retired after teaching science for 30 years, I wanted to continue helping people.

Q: Why is volunteering important to you?
A: To me, it’s the key to enjoying living. I think it’s a valuable way of using my time, and I feel like it’s God’s desire that we help others.

Q: What does the ministry demand?
A: Giving my time.

Q: What do you get from the ministry?
A: Enjoyment and blessings. I know when I see each of those people, I will try to add some sunshine to them, but they are really blessings to me.

Q: How do family members support you?
A: Completely.

Q: How do you see yourself involved in this in the future?
A: I hope to continue. Every day, my prayer is that God will give me someone to help.

Q: What difference will this work make for you in the future?
A: It will make me keep active. It’s amazing what it does for me.
