I feel I must respond to the Nov. 11 article titled, “Postmodern preachers.”
The article was not only saddening but much more troubling. Indulge a few quotes from the same. It referred to “the postmodern influenced emergent church.” In reference to “master orators,” (preachers I assume), it was stated that, “art, dance and new forces will play increasingly larger roles” if the church is to be relevant to the millennia’s, today’s teens and young adults. “They have shorter attention spans and process information differently from earlier generations.” Just a few of the many sentences that were more than disturbing.
I sincerely pray that no young minister found this article appealing. It seems to say that expository preaching is a thing of the past. As to attention span, I wonder where the minds of the people were when Jesus shared for three chapters during the Beatitudes and following. Certainly people “hunger to know that there is a God who loves them,” but what about the “whole counsel of God” and where is the “doctrine, reproof, correction and instruction in righteousness?” Heaven forbid that we ever mention the judgment of a Holy God!
Sounds like a desire for “ear tickling” to me. I am reminded of Vance Havner saying we “have too many Christianettes because there are too many preacherettes preaching too many sermonettes.”
