Several years ago, Salem-Troy Baptist Association began exploring the possibility of opening a thrift store.
“At that time, Everett Walker was our director of missions, and he had discussed it with another DOM,” Rhonda Turberville said. “The idea was that it would hopefully help the community and help in the association.”
And it “just went from there,” said Turberville, who now runs the STBA Ministry Center.
The center, which is totally run by volunteers, includes a food pantry open by appointment and a thrift store open on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Help for ministries
Funds from the store have gone back into helping with associational ministries from providing food to families in need to funding the work of the Salem-Troy disaster relief team.
They’ve been open since 2021.
“It’s more than just a store; we reach out to other organizations in the community,” Turberville said.
They’ve donated clothes and food to the veteran’s home in Brundidge and the Southeast Alabama Baptist Hispanic Ministry Coalition. They have also donated crocheted blankets to Sav-A-Life, a pregnancy resource ministry, and to Troy Resilience Project, a resource center for children and families.
“We’re trying to think of ways we can reach out to the community and help,” Turberville said.
