The congregation of the 45-year-old Second Baptist Church, Semmes, in Mobile Baptist Association recently voted to change the church’s name to The Cornerstone Baptist Church.
“Our purpose (in making the change) was to have a church name with a purpose,” said Pastor Jerry Anderson. “It reminds us that it’s not where we attend church. It’s what it’s about — to build our lives on the chief cornerstone, Christ.”
The name was inspired by Ephesians 2:20, in which Jesus is referred to as the cornerstone of the Church. Anderson said reaction to the change has been “overwhelmingly positive, very enthusiastic” from the newest member to four charter members who remain part of the church.
“Whatever we do, we do together,” Anderson said.
